How to remove the vig
Sportsbook odds include a margin, the vig (or juice). That is why the implied probabilities of both sides of a market add up to more than 100%. To get the fair odds, you remove that extra:
- Turn each side's odds into an implied probability: 1 ÷ decimal odds (so -110 is 52.38%).
- Add the probabilities of every side: that total is the overround (for example 104.76%).
- Divide each side's probability by the total. The results add up to 100%: those are the no-vig probabilities.
- Turn each no-vig probability back into odds: those are the fair odds.
Example: -150 / +130
| Side | Odds | Implied % | No-vig % | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | -150 | 60.00% | 57.98% | -138 |
| B | +130 | 43.48% | 42.02% | +138 |
The two implied probabilities add up to 103.48%. Dividing each by 1.0348 gives 57.98% and 42.02%, and the sportsbook keeps a hold of 3.36%.
Why fair odds matter
Fair odds tell you what a bet is really worth before the sportsbook's margin. If you can get a price better than the fair odds, for example +150 on a side whose fair odds are +138, the bet has positive expected value. You can check it with the EV calculator.
FAQ
What is the vig in sports betting?
The vig (or juice) is the sportsbook's margin. It is built into the odds, which is why both sides of a -110 / -110 market add up to 104.76% instead of 100%.
How do you calculate no-vig odds?
Convert each side to an implied probability (1 divided by the decimal odds), divide each one by the total of all sides, and convert the results back to odds.
What is the hold on a -110 / -110 market?
Each side is 52.38%, for a total of 104.76%. The hold is 1 minus 1 / 1.0476, about 4.55%.
Which method does this calculator use?
The multiplicative method: each side's implied probability is divided by the overround. It is the most common way to remove the vig.
